About
I made this in a weekend. There is only one lamp, and it is the same lamp for everyone. Tending it makes it brighter for the next person. If nobody comes, it dims.
There are no accounts because the point is that you don’t know who else is here. There are no counts because the moment we start counting, the meaning changes.
The only words allowed are a few — a phrase, a name, a wish. After you tend, you can leave one for the next stranger, and you’ll see one a stranger left for you. They aren’t conversations. They’re small breaths in a quiet room.
Tending does not depend on anything you do or are. You cannot pay to make the flame stronger. Nothing makes the flame stronger except being here.
If the lamp made you think of someone, send it to them. That is the only thing the lamp asks for.
If you want to know why I left so much out, I wrote a longer note: what I refused to add to The Lamp.
The Lamp is one of a small collection of quiet things I’m making on the internet.
